The current global garment industry operates on a fundamentally unsustainable model. Environmentally, it is one of the most polluting sectors—characterized by fragmented production and sale across continents, rampant overproduction and overconsumption, excessive waste, toxic chemicals, and high carbon emissions.

Socially, the industry thrives on opacity and exploitation. Millions of workers across the value chains endure violations of their rights. Production countries are pitted against each other in a race to the bottom, where labor protections and environmental standards are sacrificed for competitiveness. Meanwhile, holding companies accountable for abuses within their value chains remains extremely difficult.

In this toxic economic landscape, the business models of most garment companies are inherently unsustainable. What is often presented as “change” is superficial—minor adjustments marketed as progress, while the core exploitative model remains untouched. These tactics may boost sales and profits, but they fail to deliver meaningful improvements for people or the planet.

Consumers are misled into believing they are making ethical choices, while unknowingly contributing to environmental degradation and human suffering. Companies that genuinely strive to reform their practices face unfair competition from those operating below acceptable human rights and environmental standards, making real transformation even harder.

What we need is radical change.

The garment industry must undergo a profound transformation—starting with its business models. We need to produce fewer garments, closer to home, and under conditions that respect workers’ rights. Supply chains must be shorter, both in distance and complexity. Circularity must become the norm, and mandatory due diligence must be enforced, including accountability for violations throughout the value chain.

To make this transformation a reality, we need binding national and international legislation. A robust monitoring system must be established to verify compliance and impose sanctions on companies that fail to meet their obligations.
Crucially, workers and their trade unions must be involved at every stage of this process. Their voices and experiences are essential to ensure that negative effect are limited and that the transformation benefits all stakeholders—not just corporations, but also the people and communities who make our clothes.
