Participativní proces je sled participativních aktivit (např. nejprve vyplnění dotazníku, poté předložení návrhů, diskuse o nich na osobních nebo virtuálních setkáních a nakonec stanovení priorit) s cílem definovat a rozhodnout o konkrétním tématu.
Příklady participativních procesů jsou: proces volby členů výboru (kde jsou kandidatury nejprve představeny, poté projednány a nakonec je vybrána kandidatura), participativní rozpočty (kde jsou návrhy předkládány, ekonomicky oceněny a hlasuje se o nich s dostupnými penězi), proces strategického plánování, společné navrhování nařízení nebo normy, návrh městského prostoru nebo tvorba plánu veřejné politiky.
